Avon and Vila sneak inside a Federation radio link station to steal a crystal needed to break new Federation pulse codes. After they teleport, Liberator scanners pick up a 700 year old spacecraft. It appears to be drifting, but Cally senses "something malignant" on it. Blake decides to warn the base, which has started a salvage operation.

"That is a Federation base down there," Jenna objects. "The salvages are manned by Federation personnel."
"I need proof of that."
Avon, meanwhile, contacts Tynus, the base commander. They had been partners in a fraud; when he was arrested, Avon kept his mouth shut. He is now certain he can rely on the help of the man he once protected.
"I hope you can trust him," Vila says.
"I told you, he's a friend of mine."
"Yes, I always knew you had a friend. I used to say to people, I bet Avon's got a friend somewhere in the galaxy."
"And you were right. That must be a novel experience for you.
When Blake goes down to the base to personally warn the scientist in charge of the salvage operation, Avon is exasperated.
"I could never stand heroes. Blake takes risks to help other people. Sometimes people he doesn't even know. One day that great big bleeding heart of his will get us killed."
"Unless somebody ditches him first."
Avon's only response to Vila's remark is a quiet stare.
Blake tries to help stop a plague the ship brought as Avon goes on with the plans to get that crystal.
