Blake has decided to destroy Control, the computer complex nerve center for all Federation activity. After some discussion, Cally, Gan, Jenna, and Vila agree to join him.
"I thought they would," Avon tells Blake. "Not very bright: but loyal."
"That leaves you. Are you going with me or not?"
"Well, of course. I'm surprised you ever doubted it."
"Do you want to tell me why?"
"I like the challenge."
"You don't want to tell me why," Blake translates.
"If we succeed, if we destroy Control, the Federation will be at its weakest. The resistance movements on Earth will launch an all-out attack to destroy the Federation. They will need unifying: They will need a leader. You will be the natural choice. With you running the campaign on Earth, somebody has to take charge of all this."
"You want the Liberator."
"Exactly," Avon admits freely. "If we succeed, the destruction of Control gives us both what we want."
Servalan and Travis, however, are expecting them. When things don't go perfectly, Vila tries to back out.
"I don't want to go."
"You surprise me," Avon says.
"I don't feel well. I'm going to be a big handicap."
"I'm used to that."
After finally penetrating the complex, they discover that Control was moved thirty years previously. The realization devastates Blake, who sinks to the floor in despair. As Avon tries to comfort him, Travis enters.
Even Jenna's imaginative rescue can't completely salvage the situation.
